Like many tech companies, Amazon has a tiered structure for its product management roles. Understanding the Amazon product manager levels is important before interviewing and accepting an offer, as they influence your product management responsibilities, total compensation, and career trajectory within Amazon. Amazon determines the Amazon PM level based on a combination of factors, including years of experience, the scope of responsibilities, and the overall impact of the role.

While it may seem that by having a clearly defined Amazon product manager level it would offer a straightforward path to advancement, Amazon is unfortunately well-known for its tough PM promotion process, making it challenging for PMs to move up the ladder. On top of this, Amazon product managers fall into two categories: non-technical (PM) and technical (PM-T). While both roles focus on driving product strategy and execution, the Amazon PM-T position requires a more in-depth technical background. Though the Amazon product manager levels are consistent across both categories, the Amazon PM-T salary offers a higher salary range than their non-technical PM counterparts.

In this section, we provide an overview of the Amazon product manager levels to help you navigate their role levels. As a product manager at Amazon, you’ll notice that the Amazon PM levels don’t distinguish between the Individual Contributor (IC) and Manager career paths, unlike the Amazon Software Engineer levels. Instead, the Amazon PM level and title remain the same with your designation as an IC or manager depending on your specific role focus.

Below are the Amazon product manager levels:

  • Amazon L5 Product Manager (PM)

  • Amazon L6 Product Manager (Senior PM)

  • Amazon L7 Product Manager (Principal PM / Senior Manager)

  • Amazon L8 Product Director (Director)

Amazon Product Manager Salary Components

In an Amazon product manager salary package, you’ll find three core compensation components. For more in-depth details from us on Amazon’s compensation structure, you can check out our Amazon Salary Negotiation and Product Manager Salary Negotiation articles. Below is a quick overview of what to expect before we cover the average compensation for Amazon product manager salary.

Amazon Base Salary

This is the fixed amount you’ll receive in each paycheck at Amazon. There are set base salary ranges for each Amazon PM level and location.

Amazon Equity Package

Upon joining Amazon as a product manager, you'll receive an initial grant of Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). These Amazon RSUs vest in different amounts over a four-year vesting schedule: 5% in year one, 15% in year two, and 40% in both years three and four.

Amazon Sign-on Bonuses

Amazon provides product managers two sign-on bonuses – one for the first year and one for the second year. Each are paid out monthly over the respective periods instead of a lump sum payment.

Amazon Stock Refreshers

These are annual Amazon RSU refresh grants that you may receive based on your annual product management performance review at Amazon.

It’s important to note that unlike other tech companies you will not see an annual performance bonus as part of your Amazon product manager salary.
